Ice ring
The fastest outdoor tracks of the world
The famous ice ring, that lies at the entrance of Collalbo can’t be overseen by visitors. When entering Collalbo, your eyes will quickly spot the letters ARENA RITTEN, you will also see the flags at the ice ring wave at you and from there you have a great view of the Dolomiten.
The ice ring with its panorama on the Schlern made it famous through the years. In the year 1989 the ice was upgraded to artificial ice and the international skating union gave the first three speedskating championships to the organising committee: 1990, 1991 and 1992.
The fast ice has been praised by many participants from all of the world. They have also valued the hospitality and the flawless organisation of many competitions. In 1998 the ice ring got modernized with the newest technical discoveries: the track got firmed up and it got a new underpass and a new curve radius. The ice ring was brought to the newest stand, which made it popular around the world. The good image of the ice ring lead to more championships in 1999, 2004 and 2006
How the ice ring in Collalbo originated
After the first world war speed skating competitions took place at the Wolfsgrubener See. Due to the big interest in wintersports, the community politicians decided to speed up the construction of the ice ring. In the winter of 1971 the ring was finally opened.
